The village of Thronos
is situated in the northern part of the Amari valley with a magnificent
view over the valley and the mountainsides of Psiloritis.
The name refers to the village
being an Episcopal residence (the throne of the church) during the first
Byzantine period, when the area was called Apano Syvritos as mentioned in
the documents from the 4th Ecumenical Synod in 451.
The town was destroyed in 828
during the Saracen attack on Crete.
In the middle of the village is
a little church dedicated to The Passing Away of the Virgin Mary (Koímisis
tis Theotókou) from the 11th century. The church is built on top of the
mosaic floor of a big cathedral, presumably dating back to the 4th century. |

The church is on the inside
ornamented with beautiful frescoes. |

The church is locked, but you
can borrow the key in the local taverna or café.
Sources from 1577 refer to the
village under its present name. At that time it had about 350 inhabitants. |
